Reiki (pronounced as 'ray-key') is made up of two words—'rei' and 'ki'. 'Rei' can be interpreted as a higher form of intelligence while 'ki' denotes life force. Taken together, 'reiki' is understood to be a kind of universal energy. It is a form of healing with its roots in Tibetan Buddhism and was rediscovered in Japan in the 19th century by Dr Mikao Usui.
Dr Usui's wanted to discover how spiritual leaders such as the Buddha and Christ were able to perform miraculous healing through mere touch without depleting their own energy reserves. A deep spiritual experience led him to devote several years to the study. Reiki is based on the belief that thoughts have the power to direct energy - the underlying dynamo shaping the world.
Students are trained by Reiki Masters through a series of attunements. During an attunement process, the Master selects a series of symbols, which represent important points located along a person's energy field, and guides them through higher vibrations of energy. This attunement process enables the trainees to access the healing energy on their own—and in turn, help others, as Practitioners, to access it too.
Reiki is a gentle, nurturing treatment which clears energy blocks and accelerates the body's ability to heal physical and emotional issues. Reiki is based on the idea that the "universal life force energy" flows through us and causes us to be alive. When our "life force energy" is low, we are likely to get sick or feel stressed. When it is high, we feel happier and healthier.
With Reiki, “universal life-force energy” is channelled through the practitioner's hands and passes into your body, helping to renew and balance its energy levels. Your body only absorbs as much energy as it requires. You do not need to be ill to receive Reiki, you just need to be open to receiving the “universal life force energy” that is all around us.
Reiki treats the whole person - body, emotions, mind and spirit. It works in conjunction with all other medical and therapeutic techniques to relieve side effects and promote recovery from illnesses, accidents and surgeries. When clients receive Reiki, they are likely to feel relaxed and sometimes sleepy as the energy reduces stress and promotes healing. During a Reiki treatment, you will lie on a massage table while the practitioner's hands are slowly and mindfully placed in a series of positions on the head and body to bring about balance and healing

Most people find Reiki very relaxing and nurturing, with a sense of calm and well-being during their treatment and after. It can be used together with Sound & Colour Healing for an even deeper healing experience.
Children and pets also benefit from Reiki. Many cancer wellness centres use Reiki as an energy based approach to promote overall wellness. Cancer patients who receive Reiki have been reported to feel more relaxed, experience decrease in stress or anxiety, less pain and faster healing, diminished or no side effects like nausea/skin eruptions from chemotherapy or medications, sleeping better, increase in energy, greater clarity and an overall improved sense of well-being.
Treatment:
A Reiki treatment can take up to one and a half hours. The client does not need to take off any clothing other than their shoes, heavy jackets, belts, jewellery and watches. As a Reiki practitioner, Sukhwinder knows intuitively where to place her hands to allow soothing and gentle energy to flow to the client. Sometimes this energy is felt as warmth, coolness or as a gentle tingling. Sometimes the individual may feel nothing at all, even though healing is taking place. By having a Reiki treatment, a deep sense of inner peace and balance can be achieved which can enhance the natural healing of the body, soul and mind.
